A Second Chance for Kah Poh
Kah Poh,44
For 20 years, Kah Poh’s life stood still.
After being convicted in a drug-related case, he spent two decades behind bars. By the time he was released, the world outside had changed dramatically. Everyday tasks that many take for granted had become unfamiliar to him. He had to reapply for his identity card, learn how to use a smartphone, and slowly readjust to the rhythm of daily life.
Returning home also meant returning to a quieter life with his father. Today, the 44-year-old lives with him in their ancestral home. Since his mother passed away from breast cancer in September 2020, they have relied on one another. His father continues to work in floor tile installation whenever construction projects are available, but the income is uncertain. Without projects, there is no income. Like many traditional father-and-son relationships, they are both reserved, speaking only when necessary rather than expressing their feelings openly.
Despite the challenges of starting over after 20 years, Kah Poh has taken an important first step. He has successfully secured a job and is working hard to adapt to his new work environment and rebuild his life one day at a time.
His hopes for the future are simple, yet deeply meaningful.
He hopes to find and maintain stable employment so that he can become self-reliant and shoulder the responsibility of caring for his father. He also wishes to obtain a motorcycle or car driving licence, allowing him to travel more conveniently for both work and daily life.
Most importantly, he hopes to repair the ancestral home where he and his father continue to live. Years of ageing have taken their toll on the house, and during rainy days, water leaks through the roof, making repairs and maintenance necessary. By restoring the home, he hopes to create a safer and more stable place for both of them while easing the daily inconveniences they currently face.
For Kah Poh, rebuilding life is not about erasing the past. It is about embracing the opportunity to begin again—finding dignity through honest work, caring for the only family he has left, and restoring not only the house he calls home, but also the future he is determined to build.
