A Family’s Struggle to Hold On: When Illness and Hardship Hit Together

Ng Bee Kean, her husband, and their daughter live in a rented home with disabled-friendly facilities. It’s not ideal—but it’s the only shelter they have.

Bee Kean was born with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), an extremely rare condition that renders her unable to care for herself and causes her to endure daily physical pain and discomfort. Her husband suffers from a mental illness, which requires long-term treatment and a stable living environment to keep his emotions in balance.
