Yuen started off with a small step to explore doing something meaningful for the lives of those in need and now has led to an unexpected journey of 8 years and still counting at Great Heart. Yuen shared a glimpse of how a team of four grew into a little family with almost 20 members now.

The journey has been somewhat bittersweet, with a steep learning curve, as most of what we tried to do to help solve our targeted social issues had to be started off from scratch.

We plan, we research, we explore, and we meet up with many other like-minded people from all walks of life, both young and young-at-heart, with the same intention of making our society a much more caring place to live in.

I still remember the time when we first got our hands on a deserted bungalow unit, with weed growing taller than myself. We get our hands dirty to tidy up the place, and with sweat and tears, and plenty of help from many others.

We finally get to transform that abandoned bungalow into what is today known as the Great Heart Community Centre (GHCC) that serves a few hundreds of needy people every month.

Yes, it takes a lot of hard work, plenty of determination, and the need to be thick-skinned, facing constant rejections, sometimes even multiple rejections per day, in order to be able to garner the support of sponsors, donors, and sometimes, volunteers.

Seeing the growth and success in some of our beneficiaries has made the journey worthwhile. Here’s to many more years to come!
